“Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured."
B.K.S. Iyengar
B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014)
Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja (BKS) Iyengar is internationally respected as a modern yoga master. His method of teaching yoga is known for its sophisticated understanding of physical and mental movement, balancing strength, flexibility and endurance.
B.K.S. Iyengar (affectionately known as Guruji by his students) continued to practise yoga well into his nineties until his death in August 2014. Through his uninterrupted practice of yoga throughout his life he developed an innovative method of teaching, which is characterised by alignment, precision and intelligent sequencing of postures. Guruji’s method promotes self-awareness and integration of body, mind and soul. The postures are adjusted to meet the conditions and needs of each student.
B.K.S. Iyengar was a pioneer in the therapeutic application of yoga to the treatment of many medical conditions. His revolutionary use of yoga props enables students of all abilities to work to their greatest potential and overcome their difficulties. He made yoga accessible to all.
B.K.S Iyengar’s main teachings can be found in his numerous books including Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama, Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Light on Life.
